Regulations
In the UK, the three courses
offering full-time chiropractic education to national and international
standards are at:
The Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth
The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic at the University of Glamorgan
McTimoney College of Chiropractic, Accredited by University of Wales
These institutions offer a full-time degree course (4 or 5 years) in
chiropractic and the degree course includes intensive training in a variety of
subjects including life sciences, radiology, neurology, biomechanics, clinical
medicine and differential diagnosis.
All of the Chiropractors to whom you will be referred by the Chiropractor
Appointment Line are experienced and have received good feedback from other
patients.
Professional Regulation
In common with medical practitioners and dentists, all Chiropractors are
registered by law under the Chiropractors Act 1994 and the title 'Chiropractor'
is protected under this legislation. The profession is statutorily regulated
through the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and
it is illegal to practise as a Chiropractor without being registered with the
GCC. Chiropractors can only be registered if they have appropriate
qualifications, are of good character and are physically and mentally fit.
The General Chiropractic Council GCC is a government body which oversees the
chiropractic profession, setting the standards for education, continued
professional development, conduct and practice.
In the UK no one may use the title "Chiropractor" or imply that they are a
chiropractor unless they are registered with the GCC. This guarantees that they
are fully qualified and safe to practice having either been educated at a fully
accredited college in the UK or have undertaken a test of competence if educated
abroad.
One of the requirements for maintaining this registration is to fullfil a set
number of hours of "continuing professional development" each year. This
essentially means that a chiropractor must continue with post graduate training
each year to maintain the highest standards of patient care, so you can be
confident that registered chiropractors are competent and safe.
